The graduate training programme (GTP) is an employment based training programme run by:

  • Recommending Bodies (RBs) e.g. a school - who applies to the Graduate Teaching Training Registry (GTTR) for each graduate they wish to employ and,
  • Designated Recommending Bodies (DRBs) e.g. a consortia of schools working with higher education institutions, who are allocated a number of places

To apply for the Graduate Training Programme you need to:

  • be over 24 years of age
  • meet trainee entry requirements
  • have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade C in the GCSE examination in English and mathematics
  • apply for a post in a school, a RB or a DRB. You may already be employed in the school
  • ensure the school is willing to train you and to apply for GTP
  • select the age range in which you want to teach - 11-16 years, 11-19 years, 14-19 years
  • all trainees have to teach across two consecutive Key Stages
  • each trainee must have experience in at least two schools
  • with the school, audit your skills against the Professional Standards for QTS
  • the school will then draw up a training plan
  • the minimum length of training is 24 weeks with up to a maximum of three terms depending on experience
  • when the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) have accepted your application your training will begin.

During the training you will be expected to:

  • teach a balanced timetable of Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, GCSE Dance, AS/A2 Level Dance
  • keep a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate you have met all the standards
  • to include lesson plans, schemes and units of work and trainees reflections
  • research and complete a number of written assignments
  • teach in another school for a minimum of 4 weeks
  • take and pass the literacy, numeracy and ICT Skills Tests
  • have regular meetings with your mentor with lesson observations to monitor progress
  • evidence of pupils’ work planned, taught and marked
  • provide a current CV
  • complete, with support, a TTA Career Entry Development Profile.

    On completion of the training programme:
    You will undergo an external assessment in order to validate the recommendation that you have met all the standards in order to receive Qualified Teacher Status.
